DARPA Wants to Make Human Space Travel Possible within the Next Century
Recently, Voyager 1 became the first man-made object to leave the boundaries of this Solar System and reach the outermost layer of the heliosphere. Reaching that far a spot took the Voyager 1 more than 35 years at the speed of 3.6 AU, which is 334,640,905 miles per year. For the Voyager 1 to reach to the nearest star, called Proxima Centauri, it would take more than 75,000 years. Who knows what the mankind would be like by then, but for sure the Voyager would continue to make to its destination, if nothing untoward occurred in between.
For DARPA, it is a dream realizable and they are willing to fund more of such space projects including making it possible for people to travel as they do around the world. DARPA is funding to form an organization that will look after making this possible by creating human interstellar travel achievable within the next century. So if you could not go just now, your future children could surely boast to their posterity that they were the first ones to have been there.
The project which is being funded US$500,000 has been awarded to Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence and they will create a 100 Year Starship (100YSS) that will gather experts in the various fields to make this dream of travelling through stars possible. The aim is to make the space flight safe for humans as space is a cruel and lonely place when it comes to conditions suitable for sustenance of human life. So till the time that space travel becomes a reality for all human beings as fun trips, we can divulge in the sci-fi novels and movies to serve our imagination and curiosity.
